Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised Administration and Results Workshops

GDO-R workshops with The Gesell Program in Early Childhood prepare early childhood professionals to understand and better meet the unique needs and abilities of young children through a comprehensive training in:

  • the foundations of child development,
  • the art and science of objective observation inspired by wonder, and
  • how to administer and then interpret the results of the Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised (GDO-R) and the Gesell Early Screener (GES)

The Gesell Assessment System uses direct observation to evaluate a child’s cognitive, language, motor and social-emotional responses in five strands: Developmental, Letter/Numbers, Language/Comprehension, Visual/Spatial, and Social/Emotional/Adaptive.

The GDO-R is Gesell's hallmark tool and has been validated and improved with the use of strand scoring and performance levels, which group results into strands (above) and allow for specific evaluation in growth areas. A child’s performance on each strand corresponds to a Performance Level Rating (Age Appropriate, Emerging or Concern) and a Developmental Age. Developmental Age is an age in years and half-years that best describes a child’s behavior and performance on a developmental scale; it may be equal to, older or younger, than the child’s actual chronological age. It encompasses a child’s social, emotional, cognitive/intellectual and physical make up.

These in-depth workshops are offered to new and experienced users alike. Live and online training options are now available. Additionally, in 2021 in response to the pandemic a follow up workshop was created to teach experienced assessors to use the Gesell Assessment System virtually, when assessing a child with a video camera is the only option.

Certificates of Completion are provided for all workshops.

The Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised for the 6-9-Year-Old Child

Online workshop. Please see calendar for dates and to register.

Prerequisites: Completion of the 2.5-6 year old workshop is required, and that content will not be revisited in depth. Participants are recommended to have completed at least 30 practice child assessments with 2-6 year old children prior to attending the 6-9 workshop. This will best prepare the participant to seamlessly amend the protocol for the 6-9 year old child.

In this online workshop participants will learn to administer the Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised (GDO-R) to the 6 to 9-year-old child and interpret results as they relate to neuro-motor, language, cognitive, social, emotional and adaptive responses.

The Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised Renewal

Gesell strongly recommends examiners renew their certificate of completion every 5 years. New protocols rolled out in 2021 compel us to encourage examiners trained before this date to return as soon as possible. If you were trained in the last 5 years or less, you may renew your certificate of completion by participating in a live or online GDO-R workshop at a reduced rate. Please visit the first tab above for details.

Gesell Early Screener (GES) Administration and Scoring Webinar

No training is officially required to administer the GES. However, Gesell strongly recommends that assessors complete a brief online workshop to ensure examiners are adequately trained and competent in analyzing results. View upcoming workshops here.

Gesell Foundations of Child Development

Dr. Gesell documented what happens to children cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically during each stage of development, and subsequent research has confirmed his findings. Yet for those of us working with children, their behaviors can often seem mysterious and confusing. In this training study the foundations of child development and the Gesell approach to understanding children at each stage of development from 2 to 6 years of age. This understanding of the ages and stages of child development can assist teachers and parents in setting appropriate expectations for children and support their learning and development.
